A 20-BORE TOPLEVER BAR-IN-WOOD HAMMERGUN, serial no. 10735,
30 1/2in. nitro reproved fine damascus barrels, rib engraved 'J. PURDEY & SONS. 314 1/2. OXFORD STREET. LONDON.', and '2', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. and 1/2 choke, carved percussion fences, rebounding sidelocks with dolphin hammers, nipples marked 'L' and 'R', best fine acanthus scroll engraving with floral bouquets, retaining very slight traces of original colour-hardening, bar in wood (crack to underside and to rear of right hand lockplate), 14 1/8in. boldly-figured stock, weight 5lb. 8oz., in a brass-cornered oak and leather double guncase, the interior re-lined in blue velveteen cloth and with a reproduction J. Purdey & Sons trade label, the lid exterior marked 'F.J. DALGETY XVth HUSSARS.'
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed in 1880 as No.2 of a pair, with 30 1/2in. barrels, for Count d'Heshell
